Pop-Up Free Store

Drop in on move-in day and join the Action for Climate Team (ACT) for our Pop-up Free Store – a place you can visit on move-in day to pick up household items and appliances you may be missing, all while saving money and supporting a circular economy on campus!
 
What to expect: A pop-in space with an assortment of new or gently used household, kitchen, and bathroom items free for the taking! The items are first-come, first-serve.
 
Who can attend: Priority is given to new students moving in, but the store is made available to everyone!

Picnic Open House

Learn more about the place on campus – Picnic, a community wellness hub for students at UBCO. The Picnic Open House will introduce you to Picnic's health and wellness programming and resources available to students, and give you access to exciting volunteer opportunities. 

You will learn more about Picnic’s food programming, such as the free grab and go Breakfast Program and Community Cooking Classes; Picnic’s harm reduction programming, such as Drug Checking and Naloxone Training; and Picnic’s health and peer support programming, such as Dietitian on Campus, Nurse on Campus, and the Mocktail Meetups peer group. This is an opportunity to explore Picnic, see what other health and wellness resources are available to you, meet the faces behind the programs, sign up to get involved in the work, and ask all the questions you may have about student wellness supports on campus.  


What to expect: You can expect an informal environment with tables, each providing information and involvement opportunities on a particular program. The event will have optional interactive games and giveaways. You can drop in and leave at any point.

Learn how these services can support a student's transition to university and contribute to their success throughout their degree.

Join the Graduate Students’ Association (GSA) for a scenic boat cruise where you’ll meet fellow graduate students, enjoy breathtaking views of Kelowna, and make connections that will last well beyond orientation. Whether you’re new to UBCO or returning, this is an event you won’t want to miss!

What to expect:

  • A scenic 1-hour cruise with breathtaking views of Okanagan Lake and surrounding landscapes
  • A relaxed and social atmosphere with fellow new students and returning graduate students 
  • Great opportunities for photos, networking, and enjoying the fresh air (anticipate hot sun and/or wind)


Please note: This event is intended for graduate students registered at UBC Okanagan. To help reduce barriers to participation and support graduate students with caregiving responsibilities, a limited number of tickets are available for children and immediate family members. What to expect: This is a very popular event that typically results in a loud and busy environment. There will not be chairs for everyone to sit but there are often many chairs around a fire pit. There will be music playing. We will have vegan marshmallows, marshmallows, graham crackers, dairy-free chocolate, and chocolate for people to make s'mores. You can feel free to come and go throughout this event.

Join us on the Commons Field for an outdoor movie night! Chairs and snacks will be provided, but feel free to bring your own. It’s the perfect way to kick off your first week on campus and meet other students in a relaxed, fun setting. We will be watching Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. 


What to expect: There will be a lot of people on the Commons Field outside Nechako. The movie will be playing loudly and will be displayed on a large projector screen. There are occasionally mosquitoes at this time of year, so we will provide bug spray for those who wish to use it. Feel free to come and go throughout the time. The movie will start at 8pm and will run until it’s finished. 


Who can attend: Anybody who is comfortable sitting, standing, or laying outside on the grass or on a blanket.

Get your Social Insurance Number (SIN) on campus. Service Canada is offering a one-day, in-person SIN registration service exclusively for UBCO students. If you need a SIN for employment, co-op, or other work opportunities in Canada, this is a convenient way to complete the process and receive your SIN on the spot.

What to expect: Drop in and meet with Service Canada representatives who will guide you through the SIN registration process. This is a great opportunity to get an important step checked off your student to-do list before the semester gets busy.

Journalism Workshop with the Phoenix News

Join the UBCO club The Phoenix News with this hands-on introduction to Journalism workshop! Inspired by the Humans of New York project, this session invites you to interview a peer, practice active listening, and create a short story or quote based on their experiences. It is a warm, creative, and low-pressure way to meet someone new and hear their story.


What to expect: You will take part in a structured but relaxed session with about 40 other students that includes a short welcome and icebreaker to help you get comfortable. You will then learn simple techniques such as asking open-ended questions, practicing active listening, and following up thoughtfully in conversation. Afterward, you will be paired with another student to interview each other using guided prompts. What if you could build your own character for university and beyond? You’ll also gain practical strategies to translate those experiences into language for resumes, interviews, and future opportunities.

What to bring: Wear clothes and shoes you are comfortable moving in. If it is hot outside, bring a water bottle and if the sun is out, wear sunscreen!

Big White Adventure Hike

Ready for a mountain escape and breathtaking alpine views? Join us for a day trip to Big White Ski Resort, where you’ll ride the Bullet Chair up the mountain and explore the beautiful hiking trails at your own pace. Your ticket includes one chairlift ride up, after which you can enjoy a hike on the mountain and either take the chairlift back down or hike down. Along the way, soak in stunning Okanagan scenery, connect with fellow students, and experience one of the region’s most popular outdoor destinations.

As an added bonus, the Big White Carnival will be taking place during our visit, offering even more activities and excitement throughout the village.

These moderately challenging trails rewards you with stunning panoramic views of Okanagan Lake, Kelowna, and the surrounding valley. You’ll enjoy fresh air, meet new friends, and experience the natural beauty that makes life in the Okanagan unforgettable.

Kelowna is home to over 100 walking and hiking trails, come discover two of our favourites! Apex Trail is a 4km steep intermediate trail that will take you to the top of Knox Mountain, where you’ll get to look out over downtown and the lake. Paul’s Tomb trail is a 6km beginner trail that will take you to a local beach, all the while walking with views of the Okanagan Lake.  

Choose your path and both hikes will run at the same time, and the UBCO Move-U crew alongside Orientation Leaders will guide each group along their selected route.

  • 60 – 90-minute guided hike on well-maintained but uphill trails 
  • Scenic rest stops and photo opportunities at viewpoints like the summit and Lookout

Get ready to dive into one of Kelowna’s most exciting indoor water experiences! Join us for a fun-filled visit to the H2O Adventure + Fitness Centre, where you can enjoy water slides, a wave pool, lazy river, hot tubs, and more. Whether you're a confident swimmer or just want to relax in the water, this session is a great way to unwind, meet new friends, and experience a favorite local hangout.

This off-campus event is designed for students of all swimming levels and is the perfect chance to enjoy Canadian leisure culture in a safe and welcoming environment.

H2O is Kelowna’s largest indoor pool, complete with water slides, hot tubs, diving boards, lazy river, splash park, a surf machine, and more, you won’t want to miss out on this experience!

What to expect:
  • Access to all water features including water slides, wave pool, lazy river, sauna and more
  • Lifeguard-supervised environment with orientation leaders on-site
  • Social time to connect with other new students and your orientation leaders
  • Optional access to steam room and hot tubs

Join UBCO Recreation and your Orientation Leaders on the Commons Field for Spike ball, Cornhole, Giant Connect 4 and more! Whether you're a backyard games pro or trying them for the first time, it’s the perfect chance to get outside, have some fun, and meet other students.   


What to expect: You can expect a lot of people on the field playing lawn games. It will likely be loud, but you can feel free to move the game you are playing to a quieter corner of the Commons Field. Many of the games require multiple players, but you can join others’ games or make your own group to play with! Come and go as you please during that time. 


What to bring: Wear clothes and shoes you are comfortable moving in. If it is hot outside, bring a water bottle and if the sun is out, wear sunscreen!   

Who can attend: Anyone who is interested in playing lawn games!

  • Group pace with time for short breaks and conversation
  • Sustainability, fitness, social time and campus exploration all in one

Get ready to dive into one of Kelowna’s most exciting indoor water experiences! Join us for a fun-filled visit to the H2O Adventure + Fitness Centre, where you can enjoy water slides, a wave pool, lazy river, hot tubs, and more. Whether you're a confident swimmer or just want to relax in the water, this session is a great way to unwind, meet new friends, and experience a favorite local hangout.

Spend time with other students in your program of study and get to know your Orientation Leaders! You will have the opportunity to make new friends, receive important program updates, and more. What to expect: You can expect a group of roughly 30-40 people. You will be playing ice breaker games and doing other activities as a team. If your group stays on the Commons Field, you can expect lots of people and a louder environment. If this is not an environment you feel comfortable in, please talk to your Orientation Leader and they will move Team Time to a quieter location. Try your best to arrive on time to get the most out of meeting your groupmates! 


What to bring: Dress for the weather! Bring a water bottle and everything else you will need for the day.

International Student Orientation is designed to support students as they transition to life at UBCO and in Canada. Showcase

Showcase is UBCO’s official welcome to new students and your chance to explore everything campus and the local community have to offer. During this interactive information fair, you will meet campus services, student union clubs, and community organizations all in one place. This is a great way to find involvement opportunities, access support, and make the most of your time at UBCO.


What to expect: You can expect a lively, drop-in style fair that will be busy, loud, and full of energy, with many students and booths to explore. You will walk through displays featuring campus resources, student clubs, and community partners, giving you the chance to ask questions and discover opportunities. You might be thinking three hours is a long time, and you are right. It will take about an hour to comfortably explore Showcase, so you can plan some free time in your schedule to stop by.


What to bring: Bring a bag for any giveaways and comfortable shoes for walking around. It is outdoors so dress for the weather and bring a hat and suncreen if sunny! 


Who can attend: Everyone! It is highly recommended to save some time in your schedule to check it out.

Join the Faculty of Management (FOM) for a welcome session designed specifically for Bachelor of Commerce students to help you feel connected, informed, and ready for the year ahead.

During this session, you'll have the opportunity to meet the Dean of the Faculty of Management, hear from the Associate Dean, Teaching and Learning about what to expect in your first year, and connect with the team behind your Student Development Centre (SDC).

The Student Development Centre is a key part of the Bachelor of Commerce experience, providing integrated academic, career, and student support services designed specifically for BCom students. Our team is here to help you navigate university life, build your skills, and make the most of your time in the program.

What to expect: You will be seated in COM 201 for a brief welcome and introductions from Faculty leadership followed by remarks from the Student Development Centre team. You'll learn about the resources, opportunities, and supports available to you as a BCom student and have the chance to ask questions about your academic journey and student experience. International Graduate Students Orientation

International Graduate Student Orientation is designed to support students as they transition to life at UBCO and in Canada. The session covers key topics that are especially important for international students, including immigration requirements and maintaining study permit status, working in Canada (on- and off-campus), health insurance, navigating Canadian classroom culture and academic expectations, and understanding supports for language development. Students will also learn about housing, banking, transportation, and everyday living in Kelowna, as well as culturally specific adjustment strategies, community-building opportunities, and ways to access international student advising and wellness resources. 

What to expect: You can expect a welcoming and informative session from the Global Engagement Office with a large group of fellow international students.

What to bring: Something to take notes with (notebook or device), and any questions you may have about studying or living in Canada.

Let's Talk About Consent & Healthy Relationships

This interactive workshop will take you through the building-blocks of consent! Learn healthy consent practices, how to communicate effectively with sexual and romantic partners, and how to be a respectful partner. Also get introduced to the campus Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Office (SVPRO). Learn about our support services, and exciting volunteer opportunities. Start your school year off right by learning the basics of consent and healthy communication, and enjoy ice cream sandwiches during the session.


What to expect: This is an interactive workshop, but you will not be forced to participate if you are uncomfortable. This will be a relatively quiet environment. Please arrive on time. You do not need to ask to leave and can step out at any moment, but we do ask that you have respect for the presenter when doing so
